The History and Lore of the King’s Gateway Resort Complex
Exhibit Date: 2020 - 2022
This exhibit showcases the historic King’s Gateway Resort Complex built in Land O’ Lakes in the late 1930s. In its hay-day, the King’s Gateway drew entertainers, guests and visitors from all over the U. S., including big names such as Bob Hope, Lawrence Welk, movie star Mitzi Gaynor, comedy team Abbot & Costello, and President Dwight D. Eisenhower!
Built by radio and theatre magnate John H. King of Detroit, Mich., the Gateway complex became the Midwest’s premier resort destination offering luxurious rustic-style accommodations, fine dining and entertainment, and a multitude of four-season recreational activities.
The exhibit follows the fascinating Gateway story from its glamorous beginning with John H. King, to successful second owner Walt Williamson of Rockford, Ill., through a number of subsequent owners, to how the Gateway exists today –an enduring legacy that began over 80 years ago!
