Vilas Area Geology

Exhibit Date: 2001 - 2003

Our first exhibit on Vilas area geology took a look at our three billion year time-span from the ancient Archean bedrock to the relatively recent glacial landforms.  The large rock at the front of the Museum is said to be over two billion years old….a plutonic rock identified as quartz monzonite, which is from the Puritan Formation.  It was dragged here by a glacier tens of thousands of years ago.  It was collected from the middle of Razorback Rd., near Lac des Fleurs, just south of Land O’ Lakes.
