Lumbering Days Unsolved Mysteries Disappearances & Murders

Date: Wednesday, August 20, 2025
Time:
1pm
Location: Land O' Lakes Library Community Room

In the early 1900s, our Northwoods forests were teeming with lumber camps and logging operations. But what happened to many of the lumber men after the logging boom ended? Many had nowhere to go and became "shackers" living off the land as best as they could. They lived on the edges of society, mostly solitary, and some became victims of crime or became criminals themselves.

Stories of unsolved mysteries surrounding these men is being presented by the Land O' Lakes Historical Society on Wednesday, August 20 at 1:00 pm at the Land O' Lakes Library, lower level community room (access from back parking lot).

The presenter is Kay Kranz of the Manitowish Waters Historical Society, a retired high school teacher and retired adjunct lecturer in the College of Education at Mississippi State University. Learning the stories of Northwoods local history has been her interest in retirement.

Join us at the Library as Kay shares some of the stories of these men of the forest from the early 1900s until the 1950s.
